The idea for the Lawndale Thousand Man March (plus Women and Children) came from male leaders in the community who wanted to call more of the men in the adjacent sister communities of North Lawndale and Little Village into greater civil and community engagement.
The effort formally kicked off in October 2020 with an organizing march from the Dr. King Museum and Apartment Site at 16th and Hamlin to St. Agatha Catholic Church at Kedzie Ave. and Douglas Blvd. 150 youth and adults came together that day to formally announce the Second Annual 1,000 Man March with the theme “Our Youth Matter.”
The 1k Man March to be held from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. on May 1, 2021, will focus on two main goals:
• Creating summer and after-school job opportunities, and job training for youth in our two communities.
• Offering a formal mentoring program for youth in the community through the Giftedness Mentoring Program.
Other employment and social service resources will be available that day for the whole community.
The Organizing Committee is asking all community stakeholders to step up in our effort to increase summer employment and mentoring for our youth. This is a proven way to decrease violence and increase the empowerment of our young people who are our future, but who also are very much our present. They are entrusted to the adults of our communities to nurture and empower them to increase their ability to add their giftedness to the community and to the world.
